Garden Design

At your initial contact and discussion, we may agree that your garden does not require a formal design, or that you already have clear ideas and a design in mind. In this case, we will prepare a quotation based on your brief and our discussion. For inspiration and examples of our work, please visit our portfolio section.

However, you may feel that your project would benefit from the flair and creativity of a professional garden designer. At Andrews Landscaping, our experienced garden designers will help you define, envision and create the best possible outcome for your outdoor space. Depending on the designer, we offer hand drawn and CAD designs. We are also able to offer 3D garden visualisations as part of the design package.

Our Design Journey

The garden design process may contain all or some of the elements detailed below depending on your project.

Design Meeting

This is when the designer will visit you on site to discuss the brief for your garden in detail. Together, you’ll explore your vision for the space – including any “big idea” you’d like to run throughout the design – as well as your likes, dislikes and what you hope to achieve.

It’s helpful at this stage to have an approximate budget in mind, so that we can tailor a solution that works for you. The designer’s fee will depend on the size and complexity of the project, and this will be clearly explained so you can decide whether you would like to proceed.

Survey

If you decide to go ahead, the next step is a site survey. For many projects this can be carried out by the garden designer, but for more complex sites – for example with significant level changes we may recommend using a qualified land surveyor.

The survey will include a full site analysis, assessing soil type, the aspect of the house, the location of utilities and any tree preservation orders or planning restrictions that could influence the design.

Outline Design

With all the information gathered, a concept plan is then created outlining the key ideas for your garden. Depending on the designer, this may be produced as a hand-drawn plan or using computer-aided design (CAD).

3D Visualisation

You may already have ideas for your garden that you’d like to see brought to life in 3D. Our in-house CAD designer can model your concepts using a program called SketchUp, creating realistic perspectives and allowing you to virtually “walk through” your garden to get a true sense of the space and design. The fee for this service will depend on the size and complexity of your garden.

Master Plan

Once the concept plan has been agreed, a detailed master plan will be produced, setting out all the specifications required for the construction team to complete the project. Depending on the designer, these plans may be hand-drawn or created using computer-aided design (CAD).

Planting Plans

Planting plans can be created as part of the formal design process or offered as a standalone service. You may wish to refresh existing borders or need a scheme for entirely new planting areas.

Your garden designer will discuss suitable planting options, ensuring plants are placed in the right locations, taking into account orientation, soil type, your preferences, colour palette and seasonal interest. Plant selection and sourcing from the nursery, as well as setting out and planting, can all be managed as part of our service.
